Accreditation in the academic medical professions in Switzerland
Under the new Federal Law on Medical Professions, MedBG, which entered into force in September 2007, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, chiropractics and pharmaceutics are considered medical professions. The accreditation of courses in basic medical education and postgraduate medical education leading to a federal degree or postgraduate title is mandatory under MedBG.
The accreditation decision of medical education falls under the competence of an independent accreditation authority (Swiss Accreditation Council) and the Swiss University Conference, but the Federal Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is responsible for the accreditation of postgraduate medical education.
